THE MET: MANUS X MACHINA
The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art 2016 exhibit is MANUS X MACHINA, Manus meaning made by hand, and Machina meaning made by machine. The exhibit explores the contrasts between and the union of the made by hand and the made by machine haute couture and avant-garde ready to wear. The exhibit includes haute couture pieces that are technology based. One dress could change form via a remote control. Other pieces are polar opposites, hand made dresses completely made of tiny beads; technology free.
The entrance to the exhibit begins in a large hall. Upon entrance you are immersed into a dreamy haze, preparing you for the collision you are about to have with some of the most poetic Fashion you and your eyes will ever experience. You do not need to be "into fashion" to visit the exhibit, it's for anyone and everyone who appreciates visual art. I feel like I hear too often the school of thought that fashion is a depthless, and shallow cover of the body. I found it very exciting that the exhibit succeeded in showing how fashion is a visual art form, and can be a visual experience of poetry, the most important (at least in my eyes) and overlooked identity of fashion. With more than 170 ensembles ranging from the early 20th century to today you are almost sure to see at least one ensemble that you like and appreciate.
Thanks to the Costume Institute for another great exhibit!
The exhibit will be open until August 14. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located at 1000 5th avenue, New York, NY.
